A large amount of domestic water usage can be attributed to flushing lavatories and washing our clothes. Rainwater harvesting can significantly reduce your annual mains water consumption, sometimes by as much as 50%, by using filtered rainwater to complete these tasks and as rainwater is naturally soft, it is much better for your clothes and washing machine! An average house would require a tank of approximately 3,000 litres buried in the garden. Rainwater is collected which feeds the tank via a filter.
Water is then pumped back into the house to the points of use via a separate pipe system. An outside tap can be fitted to supply water for the garden from this tank as well. Excess water from the tank runs off into the normal drainage system and in times of drought this system can be replenished automatically from the mains supply.
